The Secret World of Self-Publishing

Exhausted from querying every publisher and literary agent in Canada? Consider self-publishing!

Tired of hearing nothing but silence from the traditional publishing world, but overwhelmed at the idea of publishing your masterpiece yourself? This workshop will demystify the indie-publishing process, and give you a check-list of the numerous things to consider when launching your book on your own. We will discuss managing expectations with your writing endeavours; the different types of self-publishing which are possible; the various costs involved with publishing and then publicizing your book; and how, in 2025, your book will likely be competing against one written largely by A.I. Despite the various hurdles, your words deserve to be read, and self-publishing is one way to put your books in the hands of your future fans.

Participants will also receive a copy of one of the author’s books included in their ticket price!

Chris Tomasini is the librarian at Lakehead University in Orillia. He is also the author of three self-published novels. Chris's historical-fiction novel, Close Your Eyes: A Fairy Tale, won the 2022 "Historical Fantasy" award from the Historical Fiction Company. In 2025, Within This Darkness, book one of a young adult trilogy, was shortlisted for the Whistler Independent Book Awards. Now something of a mid-career veteran at self-publishing, Chris is excited to share his thoughts on both the writing process and the indie publishing world.
