The objective of the Food Security for Students project is to ensure that our students can concentrate on their studies by working to eliminate student hunger at Lakehead University.

Highlights:

  • Student food insecurity is a nationwide issue. Meal Exchange (2022) found that in the Fall of 2021, 56.8% of post-secondary students across Canada were food insecure.
  • Efforts to increase the quality of food that students access on campus include ensuring culturally diverse, nutritional, dietary accommodating foods and providing fresh fruit weekly at the People’s Potato free lunch program.
  • Programming like the People’s Potato, the Gardens and Greenhouse project, and the Faculty and Staff Food Drive Challenge provides additional means to ensure students have nutritious and delicious food access throughout the year.
  • Working collaboratively with the student lead Food Resource Centre to implement student-centered solutions, services, and programming.

How to help:
The Food Security for Students project is looking for support to continue maintaining adequate food resources and help improve the quality of their offerings. This fund supports initiatives of the Lakehead University Food Security Committee, a collaborative effort by our Student Affairs Office, student leaders, professors, researchers, and staff, offering key support programs on our campuses.  Programs include but are not limited to:

  • Free food distribution
  • The People’s Potato lunch program
  • Chopped U cooking classes
  • The Good Food Box (a box of fresh fruits and vegetables at a subsidized cost)
  • Emergency food support
  • Ramadan program (specific nutritious meals that are specifically made for fasting students)

Your gift will allow the Committee the flexibility to purchase additional supports as needed and respond accordingly to changing needs.
