The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the largest and longest running engineering competition in Canada. The competition is hosted in different cities across Canada each year, where over 450 students and 20 different universities build a toboggan and race it against other competitors. The toboggan requires a metal roll cage, functioning steering and breaking systems, as well as concrete skis. The toboggan is also restricted to a maximum weight of 350lbs. Teams are fully student led and provide the opportunity to run their own engineering project.
The competition also has a spirit portion, where teams are encouraged to pick a theme, design their toboggan around it, dress in costume, and really make themselves stand out. The competition allows for students to develop new innovations and express their creativity. Additionally, students are encouraged to participate in exploring other universities' designs, engage with other students, and build connections with industry sponsors.
